I believe the definition of the friendship I keep with Daniel, Zack, and the mighty Crazy Cruz, would be fun, and fun all the way. Nothing other than that.
We might just have had what Cruz usually called the Best Days of Life fun, a couple of days ago, but when we had another fun today, it became the best day of our lives. He always said that.
I was in my office on a Thursday morning when my secretary rang me and said she had Cruz on the line.
“Oh……. Cruz means trouble,” I said to her.
“And lots of fun,” she replied. “He must have heard that your vacation is next week.”
“From whom exactly?” I asked her, frowning my face as if she was right before me.
“I don’t know.”
I could picture her in my mind, eyes rolling as she said that as if that would be convincing enough to herself. I stayed silent on the line.
“Don’t look at me that way,” she said suddenly
“But you are not even here.” I protested. “Stop acting like a witch, and put him through.”
“Oh I am,” she said and put his call through
“Do you guys have to deliberate on the phone before she can put me through now?”
“We have to do many things before you are put through Cruz. How are you doing man? It’s been a while.”
He ignored my greetings.
“We are going to Florida, man. Pack your bags, and we are hitting the road tomorrow.”
“What? But I need to clear my table first.”
“I have asked your secretary to clear it up and suspend what could be suspended. “
I know it was a waste trying to give any excuse, Cruz would never give up until he hauled my ass out of wherever it was sitting and on the road.
“Don’t pack too much.”
The next day I noticed an RV parked at the front of my house. At first, I thought it was the guys, so I expected them to come up to the house, but nobody did; nobody even came down from the car. Then I was tempted to call the cops, but another side of my brain said I should not, that it was the guys. Although I wasn’t sure, I decided to give it a try.
I went around my house and came through the back of the car.
“This is the police. Please come down gently and put your hands where I can see them.”
What if they are not the one in the RV, and real bad guys were in there waiting to pounce on someone, probably me. What would they do when they realized I wasn’t a cop? Would they shoot me at once?
All these questions were running through my mind when I heard Cruz talking inside the RV telling the others that he had told them I was going to call the police as he started to open the door.
“Good morning office…” They were so surprised to see me at the door as he opened it.
“I told you he was not going to call the cops. Give me your bets,” Zack said.
The idiots had placed a bet on me.
That morning we started for Florida. Taking the 5 hours fun-filled journey to Orlando City with these guys was amazing.
Although Daniel believed it was crazy to drive all the way from Georgia to Orlando only to come and stay in an RV park and paying to stay inside the bus, he was only saying that because we all knew he wouldn’t have it any other way.
The RV Park was so beautiful and pretty close to Disney world. Well, I don’t know if Disney world was not supposed to appeal to the grown-ups, but it did to me. That is each time I come here, and it was always new to me.
But there was no Disney World for the guys on this vacation. We would be having all the fun we could get from this park, and then we would hit the beach before we headed back to where we came from. That was the plan. Well, the unsaid plan.
One thing I was sure of was the fun this place promised. Dan, Zack, Cruz and I competed with some old ladies in the camp. Everybody thought we were crazy to play shuffleboard with the old girls. However, the fun we had in that game proved everybody wrong.
“I bet old Mrs. Jefferson would have kicked your ass if I had not intervened,” Zack said to me later that day when we went back to the RV for the night.
“I was only allowing her to have the day. One needs to cheer the old ones up.”
“Oh they don’t need cheering anymore, they have had all the cheering they can have in this world.
The next day was a Saturday, and the park promised a nice pancake to eat out for everybody. The old ladies smiled and waved to us from a distance when they spotted us. We played more games in the afternoon and chilled at the poolside to cool the heat. Then in the evening, we went to the cinema to see some movies.
Daniel slept through most of the movies we saw. And Cruz cried after the main character died in a movie. Zack said the whole movie was stupid and wouldn’t stop spitting the rest of the night. What had irritated him about the movie, he would not say. And I am sure it’s because he does not know it himself.
This varied actions my friends showed after a particular event makes me wonder how we were so different and so compatible at the same time.
On the third day which was Sunday, we decided to hit the nearest beach to Orlando as we had agreed, take a good swim and tan before heading back home.
