Can a Mercedes A-class Tow a Camper or Travel Trailer?

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class has a maximum braked towing capacity of 3500 lbs for the models that can tow. The maximum towing capacity drops down to 1650 lbs upon carrying unbraked loads. Not all models of the A-Class can be used to tow a trailer.

It has the towing capacity for campers with weight by type: 7300 lbs, popups 2500 lbs, teardrops 1200 travel trailers 7500 lbs.

The manufacturer states in the owner’s manual that the AMG A-Class models are unfit for towing.

Mercedes Benz A-Class Engine

Mercedes uses the same engine for all of its three A-Class models. M260 DE20 LA: The M260 is a naturally aspirated, twin-turbocharged inline-four engine with a direct injection fuel system built by Mercedes-Benz. The M260 is used in the A220 and the A220 4MATIC, while the AMG A 35 4MATIC uses a version of the M260 modified by the AMG division of Mercedes-Benz.

The standard engine has a power output of 188 hp at 5500 rpm with 221 lb. ft of torque at 1800-4000 rpm, while the AMG-enhanced version generates 302 hp at 5800-6100 rpm with a torque of 258 lb. ft at 1800-4100 rpm.

Towing with the Mercedes Benz A-Class

The A-Class comes equipped with a trailer coupling, so towing is not an issue. When towing is needed, the trailer coupling can be folded out and then folded back in again when it is no longer required. Since the trailer coupling has a 13-pin port, you’ll need an adapter or an adapter cable to connect a 7-pin trailer.

The rear-view camera has a trailer mode that displays guidelines on the screen to assist in attaching a trailer to the vehicle’s trailer coupling.

Mercedes-Benz offers the ESP trailer stabilization program, which reduces oscillations observed while towing a trailer to prevent the vehicle/trailer combination from swerving. When the car reaches a speed of over 40 mph, ESP kicks in automatically. However, the ESP program isn’t flawless, and it wouldn’t operate in extreme situations like a trailer with a high center of gravity or strong crosswinds. Hence, it should not be relied upon. Furthermore, the program is not available on the Mercedes-AMG models of the A-Class.

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is an executive subcompact car built by German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz. It was introduced in 1997, replacing the C-Class as a minor car among the Mercedes-Benz line of automobiles. The A-Class entered its fourth generation when it was launched at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

The A-Class is available as a hatchback as well as a sedan. However, in the US, only the sedan version of the A-Class is offered. The A-Class is available in three models: the A220, the four-wheel-drive A220 4MATIC, and the high-performance AMG A35 4MATIC.

Despite being the smallest vehicle in the Mercedes-Benz lineup of cars, the A-Class is capable of towing a decent amount. The A-Class has a maximum towing capacity of 3500 lbs. The A-Class possesses a variety of features that assist immensely in towing, such as the ESP trailer stabilization as well as the trailer mode in the rear-view camera.

The A-Class is one of the few subcompact vehicles that are even able to tow, so it would be an excellent choice for those willing to haul but who don’t want to drive a massive vehicle.
