Why are there no B Batteries?

B size batteries exist but are hard to rare. You can find them in Europe where they are used for bicycle lights.

Though B type batteries are still produced and sold. Their size being 21.5mm into 60mm which is .8464 inches by 2.36 inches. The voltage they produce is 1.5 volts and for the alkaline type, it is 8350mAh.

 

Do they exist?

With modernization, there has been a lot of innovation and so is also with battery technology. With advancement, new sizes of batteries were developed and got added to the old naming system. The smaller sizes were known as AA and AAA.

The new advanced battery technology and size were more suitable for the developing consumer electronics sector. The C and D types of battery also found a place in medium and high-drain requiring applications.

But the mid-size A and B battery type did not make it up to the market standards and as a result, disappeared from the U.S. market.


What do they look like?

The B type battery was a high voltage battery that was used in the old radios powered by tubes. It came in different shapes and sizes and varied from 45 to 90 Volts. They could even reach as high as 300 volts so a lot of care was needed with them. Some of the batteries were tapped which means that the battery had a conductor running from someplace else other than the upper or the lower portion of the whole stack of the cells.


Where to buy them?

You most probably will not find the B type battery in the stores of the U.S. but that does not mean that they no longer exist in this world.

They can still be found in some parts of Europe. The B type battery there is used for bicycle lamps and lanterns. According to recent research, their popularity has almost diminished so there is a chance that its production can be discontinued.


Uses of a B type battery

Most of the people did not even know about the B type battery. But the truth is it did exist. It was mostly used in the devices that functioned with the help of vacuum tubes, the most common example are the old radios.

The battery was specifically used to supply plate voltage for the operating of the vacuum tube. As we know that the tube radios are no longer in use so is the need for the B type battery not in demand.

But this information can not be said that it is the reason for the minimal use of the B type battery. According to the ANSI rules, the B battery does not function the same everywhere as it did in those tubes. The B battery here can be referred to as a single or a group of cells that are used to supply the plate with a positive charge so as to draw the electrons outside from the filament.


Comparison of size with other batteries

The standard size of a B battery is 21.5 mm into 60 mm which if you see is quite big and not compatible with the new devices in the market.

First, let us talk about the AA type battery. The battery has a diameter of 14.5 mm and is used in wall clocks, remotes and other daily devices.

The AAA type has a diameter of 10.5 mm and is used in smaller devices like laser pens. The size of the C type is 25.5 mm and the D type is 32mm.

These are mostly used in toys. So hence the sizes are quite different from the B type battery. All have found their place but the B battery was not able to do so.


Types of batteries

Nickel Cadmium Batteries – These are also known as Ni-Cd batteries and are one of the oldest types of batteries that are even available today. These function for quite a long time and are exceptionally dependable and sturdy. One of its biggest advantages is that even when subjected to a high discharge rate it functions well and can also be used under a wide band of temperatures. They are more expensive than the lead-acid battery type but less than the other alkaline batteries.


Lead Acid Batteries – This is the most popular battery type. This battery type has the highest usage in rechargeable batteries. The battery has been working successfully for over a century now. The lead-acid battery is accessible in different setups from small sealed cells that have a capacity of 1Ah and the big ones which have a capacity of 12,000Ah.

The reason why they are used in so many different types of devices is due to low cost, a wide range of voltage, various sizes and shapes and ease of maintenance. If you compare it with other batteries, lead-acid type is the best performing.


Nickel-metal Hydride batteries – These batteries are relatively new in the market used only in aerospace, that is mainly satellites. One of the biggest advantages of this battery type is its energy density and high specific energy. These are available commercially in the form of small cells cylindrical in shape and are used in electronics that are portable.


Lithium-Ion Batteries – About half the consumer market has adapted this battery. From laptops to your mobile phones this battery is used. They have an amazing long life, high specific energy and high energy density. Another benefit is that they discharge very slow and can operate under a wide range of temperatures.


The best battery

No battery can be called the best battery as all the batteries are used for some other specific purpose. The device which works on AA can never run on a D type battery. Hence there is no best among them.


Rechargeables

 

A rechargeable battery is a type of electrical battery that can be discharged, charged and recharged a lot of times. It has one or more electrochemical cells. They are present in almost every device we use daily like our mobiles. All the four types of batteries mentioned above are rechargeable batteries.

 

The B cell is available but not very common.
