Trouts are one of the most popular fish types and here we are going to discuss some of its amazing properties which makes it so unique and popular as well:

  • The major species, brown trout, belong to a single, polytypic, species. These types of species are majorly variable and adaptable and attempt to have at least 50 different species.
  • From the scientific point of view, brown trout are one the most genetically diverse vertebrates known till now.
  • The brown trout has almost 38 and 42 pairs of chromosomes which is 15 or 20 pairs more than the humans.
  • The large-sized trout are capable of eating large prey, for example, it is also observed that the New Zealand trout feed on the periodic plagues of mice.
  • Oily fish and good source omega 3
  • The major two breeds of trout namely rainbow and brown trout do not interbreed in the wild although brown bows have been produced on fish farms.
  • The ripe old age of the brown trout can also reach up to 20 years.

Where will you find trout?

Trout are one of the easily available fishes among all. You can find a trout on lakes that can be seen rising to snatch bugs or batfish near the surface. Or you can check the edges of lakes, where you can find these fishes chasing batfish into the shallows. They are also viewable in many of the rivers and streams as they hold in the current. They also can be observed at other times but this time their presence is betrayed by them rising to pluck flies and bugs from the surfaces, or they can simply snatch emerging nymphs from just under the surface. Or you can observe it proposing their way upstream.

This species is very closely related to the salmon and char, this is because the salmon and char occur in the same genera as the fish trout do.

The most famous trout also known as lake trout live in freshwater lakes and rivers exclusively, while there are many other types such as steelhead, a form of coastal rainbow trout, that can spend two or three years at sea before returning to freshwater to spawn which is more similar to a typical salmon. Some of the trout such as arctic char and brook trout are part of the char family. For us humans, it is a really important fish since it is a source for humans and wildlife, including brown bears, birds, and several other animals. They are also considered as a type of oily fish.

Interesting Facts You Need to Know About Trout

Trout is basically a fish from the Salmonidae family and it is usually restricted to freshwater. These fishes are closely related to the salmon. They are the most important and widely recommended sports finishes and are often raised by hatcheries. However, later they can be transferred to habitable water bodies.

Trout mainly belongs to two genera: Salvelinus and Oncorhynchus. The genus Salvelinus several trout species that may be known as chars whereas Oncorhynchus includes salmon and few other species of trout. The members of these two genera can be easily distinguished from their unique body colors, teeth, and the shape of the vomer bone in the top portion of the mouth.

How to identify Trout fishes?

The chars are often recognized with their red or cream-colored spots that can be easily detected on their dark-colored body. The other identification mark is their teeth that are seen on the front part of the vomer instead of the shaft. Note that the members of Salvelinus that have boat-shaped vomer are better known as char. However, the Oncorhynchus trout are recognized from the black or red spots highlighting their lighter colored body. They have sparser teeth that grow on the shaft and front of the vomer. A wide range of trout species that were earlier classified in the Salmo genus are now placed in Oncorhynchus; the only species that fall in the Salmo category is the brown trout.

Even after so many distinctions, trout are still considered as the most difficult to classify creatures. The main confusion arises from the aforementioned anatomy related irregularities and the great variation in living habits and colors. Furthermore, the classification task remains difficult due to the ease of hybridization in the trout species and the intermixing or native and introduced species.

Generally, trout species live in cool and freshwater. They often like submerged objects or prefer deep pools and riffles. These species are commonly found in the Northern Hemisphere; however, the hybrid creatures are now introduced in many other areas as well. Their main diet includes crustaceans, other fish eggs, small fishes, and insects. The trout spawn somewhere between fall and spring; they prefer to bury their eggs in the gravel nest that is created by the female on the streambed. Many forms of trout that migrate to the sea area between spawnings also return to the streams during this time. Their eggs may generally take around two to three months for hatching and the newly hatched trout is known as the fingerlings.

The genus Salvelinus usually contain bull trout, lake trout, Dolly Varden trout, and brook trout; they are better known as species of the chars. On the other side, the genus Oncorhynchus includes rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, and the golden trout. In this list, the golden trout is basically a mountain trout that comes from the clear waters of California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. The brown trout is widely seen in the European areas; however, now they have been introduced in the other parts as well. Furthermore, the Salmon trout name is given to the cutthroat, lake, brown and the seas run rainbow trout. Note that the sea trout is mainly a common name given to various types of chars and trout that enter the sea area.

Various Types of Trouts in the World

North America is better known as the Trout fishing paradise. They are commonly seen in the remote mountain streams as well as in the waterways of the Canada and US that are more suited for the different types of trout. Let us talk more about different types of trout found in the North American region:

Pacific Trout

They are native to the area and are better named as undisputed kings of North America. People find them easier to catch and they are great to eat as well. Although there are only two species of Pacific trout that can be found in North America, the fish appearance varies greatly in terms of where you catch it.

  • Rainbow Trout

This is probably the best-known species of the Trout and they get their name from the unique signature pink strip on their side. However, this is not the only symbol to recognize them; rather, you can also identify them from the black spots on their body, square tail, and dorsal fin.

Stats reveal that rainbow trout are also native to the North Pacific coast and they can be found commonly in the area ranging from Alaska to Mexico. Other than this, rainbow trout can be found in southern Canada. There are two different types of rainbow trout: the most common ones are the steelhead and they are known for their unique appeal. They are mainly the sea-run type rainbow trout. On the other side, the main subspecies are red band trout and golden trout that can be commonly found in the Pacific states and Midwest states of the United States.

  • Cutthroat Trout

Although this type of trout is not commonly a part of the discussion as that of rainbow trout, they also have a cooler appeal in the range of species. The dramatic red color behind their lower jaw gives them the cutthroat name as it actually appeals like they are bleeding. Other than this, you can identify them from the small black spots that are commonly seen on the half portion of their top body part.

Most of the cutthroat trout live in the western part of the United States; they can be commonly seen on the Pacific Coast and while traveling over the Rocky Mountains. Other than this, these species can be also found in southwestern Canada and in the northern part of Alaska. Above their natural range, these creatures are also widely observed in the northern United States and Quebec.

European Trout

Here is another important type of fish that comes from abroad. There is no doubt to say that people have made efforts for the hybridization of trout all over the world. However, many of them are taken from Northern America.

  • Brown Trout

Although they are named as Brown Trout, they are not always the same. They can also have other colors like golden or silver depending upon where they live. No matter what color they have, they can be recognized with ease. The brown trout are identified from their red-orange spots with the silver rings around. They also have a more salmonish look as compared to other species in this category. This is just because these species are closely related to the Atlantic salmon as compared to other trout.

The brown trout were actually taken from North America; however, today these invaders live in various parts of the country including British Columbia, Alberta, California, Colorado, and the Western part of America. The brown trout also have a unique back that may cause confusion for the others.

Char:

Here comes the real confusion in identifying the original species of trout as many of them are not actually trout; such as char. This is basically a northern cousin of salmon and trout. They appear very similar to the other trout species worldwide.

  • Lake Trout

This is the largest brother to the char family and this cold-water fish can generally grow up to the estimated weight of 80 pounds. Their huge size may make them easier to recognize; however, they also have a creamy spot along with the deeply-forked tail.

Note that the Lake Trout are native species to Canada and Alaska. They are also found commonly in Northeastern US and Great Lakes. Lake trout are also given many nicknames such as Touladi, Grey Trout, Namaycush, Mackinaw, and Togue in different parts of the world.

  • Brook Trout

Here come the smaller species to the Char category. Their average weight falls around one to two pounds. Other than this, they have worm-like markings on their head and back with some white-edged spots on the lower fins.

These trout are native to the east part of North America and they can be commonly found in the Appalachian Mountains, Great Lakes except Erie, and in the northern part of the Arctic Sea. However, today brook trout are introduced in almost every part of the world. The travelers often find them in Europe, Argentina, New Zealand, and Australia.

  • Dolly Varden Trout

Here are another commonly seen trout species of Northern America. They are widely named as Char instead of trout. These species of chars remained unnoticed for a long time and then they were included in the category of Trout.

These fishes can be commonly found in northwest America and they can have an estimated weight range up to 10 pounds. They don’t have any warm like marking on their body; rather, their tails are less forked as compared to the lake trout.

Now you have gone through the several types of trout that can be found in the different parts of the world. Hope you will be able to identify them instantly during the next visit to America.
