The Ram 2500 with 6.4L Hemi has a towing capacity max of 16,320 lbs. This is enough to tow a large RV travel trailer.
Campers weight by type: travel trailers 7300 lbs, popups 2500 lbs, teardrops 1200 lbs.
Ram 6.4 Hemi Towing
Since Ram trucks have so many engine choices and models to choose from, the question of towing capacity, in general, has many possible answers. However, that being said, we’re going to concentrate on the 2021 trucks equipped with the 6.4L HEMI® V8 engine for now.
For example, from a low-end of 10,520’ for the 2021 RAM 2500 Power Wagon to a high of 17,200′ for the Ram 2500 4X4 Short Box SRW, you’d be getting good to better towing capacity. If you want or need higher towing capacity, you would have to jump up to the Ram 3500 long box with the 6.7L I6 CUMMINS HO TURBO DIESEL ENGINE to get 35,100’ of towing.
Compare with 1500 model, or 3500.
Boat Weight Averages
So, let’s say that you have a boat that you want to tow. If it’s only a small fishing boat, then it could have an average dry weight of 1,700 pounds. Boat weights go up from there from 3,100 pounds for a pontoon boat, 2,800 pounds for some ski boats, 8,000 pounds for an average speedboat, 8,700 pounds for a cabin cruiser, and 8,800 pounds for a sailboat.
If you’re towing an open ocean racer, like a Scarab or a Cigarette 38 Top Gun, you’re looking at more like 9,000 pounds. If you’re planning on towing a large camper, then you need a bigger truck.
Trailer Weight
Now, it’s important to bear in mind that the above weights are only for the boat. Then you have to add the trailer weight. If you’re only towing a 12 to 14-foot boat, for example, then the trailer could weigh a mere 150 pounds. But, of course, they go up from there from trailers for 15-foot boats at 410 pounds to those for 20-foot boats that will weigh in at 630 pounds just for the trailer.
Travel Trailer Weight Averages
On the other hand, if you’re not a boater but a camper, then you may have a travel trailer. Their average weight is approximately 5,200 pounds (2,350 kilos). Now, that’s dry weight, meaning how much the trailer weighs with empty tanks and absolutely no gear loaded in it.
You should be adding a minimum of another 1,500 pounds (680 kilos) to the weight of the trailer for water and gear for what’s known as a “real world” total. So, unless your travel trailer is a great deal bigger than the average one, any one of the Ram Truck models with a 6.4 Hemi engine should do the trick.
Plenty of Towing Power
If you choose a Ram 1500, 2500, or 3500 Big Horn, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, Power Wagon, or Tradesman, and in a Regular, Crew, or Mega cab body style, you should have plenty of towing power with the 6.4 Hemi engine. Again, if you find that you have to go way bigger with your load, then you’ll need the diesel option.
