Can a Genesis G70 Tow a Travel Trailer or Popup Camper?

The genesis G70 can tow a maximum braked towing capacity of 2600 lbs. This maximum limit only applies when there are brakes on both wheels on either axle of the towed load.

It means that the G70 can tow loads ranging from a pop-up camper (which has an average unloaded weight of 1400 lbs) to a teardrop trailer (which has an average unloaded weight of 1700 lbs).

Genesis G70 Engine Options

The G70 comes in two petrol engine options and one diesel option:

  • 2.0 L Theta II T-GDi I4: The Theta II is a turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with a gasoline direct injection. This engine is only available in the RWD model of the G70. It is able to generate 249 hp @ 6200 rpm and a torque of 260 lb-ft @ 1400-4000 rpm.

  • 3.3 L Lambda II T-GDi V6: The Theta II is a turbocharged, six-cylinder engine with a gasoline direct injection. Available in both RWD and AWD, this engine is able to generate 365 hp @ 6000 rpm with a torque of 376 lb-ft @ 1300-4500 rpm.

  • 2.2 L R II CRDi VGT I4: The R II is a turbocharged, six-cylinder engine with common rail direct fuel injection. This is the only engine for the G70 which runs on diesel. It can produce 199 hp @ 3800 rpm and a torque of 325 lb-ft @ 1750-2750 rpm.

The diesel option is the least suitable option for towing due to its poor power generation despite its ability to generate a decent amount of torque. The best option for towing is the Lambda II V6 as it has the highest power and torque generation amongst the engines.

Should you tow with G70?

Although it is very much possible to tow a decent amount of load on the G70 by the addition of towing aids such as a trailering hitch, it is not recommended as the manufactures designed the vehicle for luxury not for hauling loads. The transmission and frame of the G70 weren’t constructed with towing in mind. Therefore insisting on towing would result in excessive wear and tear on the transmission, as well as permanent damage to the frame of the vehicle.

Genesis G70 is a 4-door sedan which is manufactured by the Korean manufacturer Genesis, which is a luxury subsidiary of Hyundai. The Genesis G70 is the first compact executive released by Genesis. It debuted in 2017 at a global launch event in Seoul.

The Final Verdict

In conclusion, the G70 is able to tow a maximum braked load of 2600 lbs by installing towing aids such as a trailering hitch. There are three engines available for the G70; a 4-cylinder petrol engine, a 6-cylinder petrol engine, and a 4-cylinder diesel engine.

The engine which can tow the most amount of load and has greater longevity is the 6-cylinder petrol engine due to its power generation and torque. However, towing with the G70 should be done sparingly to avoid running the risk of damaging the transmission or the frame of the vehicle.
