According to the maximum towing capacity of 5000 lbs, the GV70 can tow anything from an A-Frame Camper (which has an unloaded weight range of 1200-2300) to a Small Travel Trailer (which has an unloaded weight range of 1200-3900 lbs) or pop up camper.

Genesis GV70 Engine

The Genesis GV70 comes in three different engines, one of which runs on diesel.

  • Smartstream G2.5 T-GDi I4: The Smartstream G2.5 is a turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with a gasoline direct injection. This is the engine that comes with the standard RWD model of the GV70. This engine has a power output of 300 hp @ 5800 rpm with a torque of 311 lb-ft @ 1650-4000 rpm.

  • Smartstream G3.5 T-GDi V6: This Smartstream G2.5 is a turbocharged, six-cylinder engine with a gasoline direct injection. This is the engine available in the premium AWD model of the GV70. This engine is capable of 375 hp @ 5800 rpm with a torque of 391 lb-ft @ 1300-4500 rpm.

  • Smartstream D2.2 CRDi: The Smartstream D2.2 is a four-cylinder engine with common rail direct injection. This engine option is available for consumers who want their car to run on diesel. This engine can generate 207 hp @ 3800 rpm with a torque of 325 lb-ft @ 1750-2750 rpm.

For towing it is recommended to use a vehicle with high power and torque. The engine which can provide the most amount of power and torque is the V6 Smartstream G3.5 therefore it is the most suitable option for towing. The least favourable option would be to tow with the diesel engine but the vehicle would still be able to tow loads safely.

Towing with the GV70

Towing can’t be done on a stock GV70. To tow on a GV70, an aftermarket towing kit needs to be purchased and installed. This towing kit includes a tow hitch and a tow hitch harness. Other than that proper towing wiring is already present in the GV70. The manufacturer strictly advises against towing during the first 1200 miles of the vehicle’s run to allow the engine to break in. Doing so would keep the engine or transmission safe from serious damage. If you do decide to tow frequently with GV70 it is worthy to note that you might need to service the vehicle much more often.

The Genesis GV70 is a luxury crossover SUV manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Genesis, which is a subsidiary of Hyundai. It was released in 2020 and is the second SUV by Genesis, the first being the mid-size GV80. As the GV70 delves into SUV territory there is a certain amount of towing that can be expected by it.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, the GV70 has a sizable towing capacity of 5000 lbs and the best performance in towing can be expected from the V6 engine. However, towing cannot be done on a stock GV70 and would require the installation of an aftermarket towing kit. Overall the vehicle is a very useful towing tool while simultaneously delivering luxury.
