Can the Jeep Gladiator Tow a Travel Trailer or Popup Camper?

The Jeep Gladiator can tow a max of 7650 lbs which can pull a camper trailer. The standard model can pull 4000 lbs which can be increased in steps as shown below.

The Jeep Gladiator features a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine which is available in either an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. The engine offers a power output of 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque.

The towing capacity is dependent on the transmission chosen and the weight of the vehicle. The towing capacity of the Gladiator is negatively affected when the transmission of the car is manual or when the weight is quite high.

The Sport and Sport S are the trim levels that offer the highest towing capacity of 7650 lbs (when equipped with the Max-Tow package). The towing capacities of the Jeep Gladiator’s trims are as follows:

  • Sports and Sport S

    • Manual: 4000 lbs

    • Automatic: 4500 lbs

    • Max Tow: 7650 lbs

  • Overland

    • Manual: 4000 lbs

    • Automatic: 4500 lbs

  • Mojave

    • Manual: 4000 lbs

    • Automatic: 4500 lbs

  • Rubicon

    • Manual: 4000 lbs

    • Automatic: 4500 lbs

Towing with the Gladiator is impossible without the Trailer-Tow package, which you can get for a premium when buying a vehicle.

The package includes:

  • A 240-Amp Alternator: A 240A alternator allows more current to be delivered to components of the vehicle.

  • Class IV Receiver Hitch: The hitch allows trailers to connect with the vehicle when towing.

  • Heavy-Duty Engine Cooling: As the engine runs particularly hot when pulling heavy loads, a heavy-duty cooling system is necessary to prevent overheating.

  • Trailer-Hitch Zoom: The 4X trailer-hitch zoom allows the hitch to be monitored more precisely compared to the regular rearview camera during towing.

The manufacturer strictly advises against towing for the 500 miles as doing so would run the risk of severely damaging the engine, the transmission, and other vehicle components. For the next 500 miles, it is recommended to keep the vehicle operating speed under 50 mph, and refraining from full-throttle starts to allow the engine to wear in.

The Jeep Gladiator has several features to assist in towing including Trailer Sway Control (TSC), which reduces the amount of sway experienced by a trailer or any other load when towed by the Gladiator. TSC operates by detecting swaying loads with sensors in the Gladiator and taking necessary action to avoid the swaying.

However, it is necessary to remember that this function cannot prevent all loads from swaying, so it should be used with care. Another helpful feature is the Hill Start Assist (HSA), which helps mitigate roll-back.

All in all, the Gladiator excels in towing with a maximum towing capacity of 7650 lbs. It is powerful enough to tow a camper.
