Can the Mercedes GLS Tow a Travel Trailer or Popup Camper?

The Towing capacity of Mercedes GLS is 7700 lbs.

Campers average weight by type: travel trailers 7200 lbs, popups 1500 lbs, teardrops 1200 lbs.

Although the chassis of the modern Mercedes-Benz GLS is not inspired by a pick-up truck, it ensures immense towing performance to the Riverside drivers. There are several engine options with variable towing capacity.

The 2020 and 2021 versions of GLS450 and GLS580 models offer 7700 lbs towing capacity whereas all 2019 models come with 7500 lbs towing capacity. Every Mercedes GLS comes with standard Trailer Stability Assist feature that can ensure reliable performance on road. It works with advanced sensors on Electronic Stability Program while ensuring proper monitoring of trailer sway.

This system is designed with 12.3-inch digital displays that provide easy updates to the drivers. The manufacturers have also added new MBUX Software that features iPhone-like virtual assistants. Other than this, Android Auto capability, Apple CarPlay, onboard Wi-Fi hotspot is a standard solution, in-dash navigation is standard features.

The driver assistance and safety features are also well improved. You can avail standard automated emergency braking system with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning along with a lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control along with semi-autonomous driving mode.

The Mercedes GLS-class is one of the most impressive additions to the SUV segment with lots of amazing features at all trim levels. This three-row SUV offers enough room for the entire family and promises comfortable rides with tech-rich cabins. Buyers can either invest in a 483 horsepower twin-turbo V8 engine or go ahead with the 362-horsepower turbocharged inline-six engine. Both of these are equipped with a hybrid assistance system to enhance your riding experience.

The 2020 version of Mercedes GLS was a whole new model; however, the 2021 version has undergone few necessary changes only. A four-zone automatic climate control system, 20-inch aluminum wheels, and ventilated seats are listed as standard features. The parking damage detection system alerts the rider via the Mercedes Me Connect smartphone app if the car senses any collision when it is parked.

The two famous models of Mercedes GLS are GLS450 loaded with a six-cylinder system and GLS580, equipped with an 8-cylinder system; both these models offer some sort of hybridization. The turbocharged 3.0litre inline-6 engine loaded to GLS450 is silky smooth and can produce 362 horsepower.

However, GLS580 is loaded with a more powerful engine that can generate 483 horsepower with its advanced twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine.

The air suspension system is a standard feature among all models; however, the manufacturers have also added E-Active Body Control as well. It makes use of a forward-facing camera unit to scan road bumps and can adjust the suspension accordingly to ensure comfort even with road imperfections. This is definitely a cool technology but is a little expensive.

During the fuel economy tests, the GLS450 version provided 19mpg on city roads and 23 mpg on highways. GLS580 does worse with 16mpg and 21mpg ratings on city and highway roads, respectively.

Compare to GLE and GLC.
