Butterfly Statistics, Facts, Trends and Analysis

I did some research to gather stats about butterflies from 15 different sources and found:

  • They weigh less than 1 gram.
  • The Monarch population has declined 97%.
  • There are 17500 species of butterflies in the world.
  • The can fly up to 37 mph and cover 100 miles per day.

Here is an infographic:

  • There are 442 species in Texas.
  • Some are poisonous like those in this post.
  • The largest has 25 cm wingspan, the average is 30 mm.
  • They can not fly if air temp is less than 55 degrees F.
  • 450 species are in decline.
