2.8 Duramax Diesel Engine Problems, Oil Capacity/Type

The Chevy Duramax diesel engine was available in 2016.

Problems reported by owners:

Troubleshoot

  1. Engine won’t start or hard to start:

    • Check for any stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) using a code reader.
  2. Loss of power, poor acceleration, or hesitation:

    • Check the fuel supply and ensure that the fuel filter is not clogged or dirty.
    • Inspect the turbocharger system for leaks or damaged components.
    • Examine the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve for proper operation and clean it if necessary.
    • Scan for any stored DTCs and address them accordingly.
  3. Excessive smoke from the exhaust:
    • Black smoke: Check the air filter, fuel injectors, and turbocharger system for proper operation.
    • Blue smoke: Inspect for worn piston rings, valve seals, or turbocharger oil seals.
    • White smoke: Check for coolant leaks, a cracked head gasket, or a damaged EGR cooler.
  4. Overheating:
    • Verify the coolant level and ensure there are no leaks.
    • Inspect the radiator, hoses, and water pump for proper operation.
    • Check the thermostat and ensure it’s functioning correctly.
    • Examine the cooling fan and fan clutch for proper operation.
  5. Excessive engine noise or knocking:
    • Inspect the engine oil level and condition.
    • Check the timing chain, tensioner, and gears for wear or damage.
    • Inspect the fuel injectors and fuel system for proper operation.
    • Examine the engine’s internal components, such as the pistons, rods, and bearings, for damage.
  6. Poor fuel economy:
    • Replace or clean the air filter if it’s dirty or clogged.
    • Inspect the fuel injectors for proper operation and clean them if necessary.
    • Check the tire pressure and ensure it’s within the recommended range.
    • Examine the turbocharger system for leaks or damaged components.
  7. Check engine light is on:
    • Use a code reader to retrieve stored DTCs and address the underlying issues.
